EPC (Electronic Product Code) GEN II Standard RFID Mobile Reader Available….

Orbiter's asset-tracking division Allaura, has recently been granted a patent on it's unique EPC GEN II mobile Dura-Pene reader. The reader was designed to stand tall, and fill a need for a mobile and wireless, hands-free system. The 52-inch high reader may be easily rolled into position and pairs of readers may be used to make an on-the-spot portal.

The readers may be used singly or in pairs. The unit is battery-operated, has memory for 550,000 tag detects, microprocessor and internal clock. It collects data in real-time mode to a server or in logging mode for later capture. The readers are designed to be durable in that they can be "hit" by forklifts and continue to operate. For Department of Defense MIL SPEC 810, versions may be purchased from Orbiter's GSA contract.

The basis of the design criteria came directly from warehouse experience. The readers are ideal for maximizing flexibility and utilization of warehouse floor workspace. For example, when pallets are built, a reader may be placed in position and as cases are stacked, tags are read for 100% read rates of all types of materials. When tags are engineered properly and affixed for item level identification, whole pallets are read as they are passed between two readers. The readers also create read-zone diversity when used in conjunction with a pallet-mounted reader. The Orbiter Dura-Pene greatly improves tag read success rates.

The product is intended to complement the current family of EPC GEN II readers and not necessarily replace them. For example, the Dura-Pene may be used to stand in for fixed base door readers when maintenance is required or assist pallet-mounted readers when greater power is required to read all items on the pallet, thus alleviating the holding of a handheld when building pallets.

Forklift operators find the patent-pending Orbiter portal solution easy to use. There are no bolts supporting the unit to concrete and thus no cracking of concrete when hit. If damaged, the units are compartmentalized and easy to fix. Additionally, the platform is reader vendor neutral and the customer may designate any number of EPC UHF readers that suit their needs. Rechargeable battery life varies by reader manufacture and the type of RF LAN specified. 40+ hours of operation has been possible without a recharge. Various battery sizes may be chosen as an option.
